Overview

Scholarships to the Postgraduate School of Dentistry (PGSD) are offered and recognised as one of the world’s most prestigious international awards for postgraduate study in Dentistry.

Inaugurated by Dr David Penn, the Scholarships are awarded annually to talented dentists around the globe who wish to study at the PGSD.  The ideal candidates for the Scholarship are qualified dentists whose primary objective, after completing their studies at the PGSD, is to make a significant contribution to their field of study in their home country.

Eligibility

Competition for the PGSD Scholarships is extremely competitive and Scholarships are awarded on the basis of intellect, vision and need.

To be considered for a Scholarship, you must have completed a dental undergraduate degree and be registered to practice dentistry in the country that you reside and you must not have commenced or previously undertaken a postgraduate degree course at PGSD.

Your application will be assessed upon any or all of these criteria:

  • Qualities of intellect – as demonstrated through academic achievement and likely benefit from study at PGSD;
  • Breadth of vision – as evidenced by the way you look at this field of dentistry presently and your perceived future contribution (post-graduation) in this field in the country where you practice;
  • Evidence of need – whether financial, geographical isolation or community needs based.

There is no specific weighting for these criteria and the Selection Committee considers all of these aspects equally. The Committee will also give preference to candidates who are not duplicating graduate studies previously undertaken elsewhere.

Benefits

In 2020, the Selection Committee may award up to two half Scholarships valued at up to $8,000 each.  Additionally, up to five quarter scholarships valued at $4,000 each may be awarded by Selection Committee and Committee on General Scholarships at the PGSD.

How to Apply

To be considered for a PGSD Scholarship, you must submit a completed Application Form with your original academic transcript/s and a Statement of Purpose of no more than four A4 pages.

The Statement should include relevant details of your background (including community and recreational interests and career-to-date),  relevant digital imagery, (family, practice) personal philosophy, professional and personal financial position (to justify need), aspirations and future career plans and how you believe you can contribute to enhancing dentistry in the country where you practice.

Referees

Candidates need to provide the names and contact details of two referees who have agreed to support their application.  At least two referees should be qualified to comment with knowledge of your academic and/or professional merit and capacity for higher degree study.  One referee should be able to provide a personal reference and this could be someone who can comment on your community activities, recreational interests and/or career.
